When would you stand on a 16?

I was reading some articles on advanced strategies, and I read that you should stand on a 16 when the dealer has 10 or higher as the upcard and the count is positive. I’m not sure about that though, I think I might stand on a 16 only when the upcard is at least a face card!

I agree, I would stand on a 16 if the upcard was 10 or higher and the count was positive. It just makes sense that way since the odds are against you.

If you are following Basic Strategy and playing with 16 you want to stay if the dealer has a 2,3,4,5 or 6.

Couple exceptions:
If you have 8/8 you want to split most of the time
If you have A/5 you want to hit or DD depending on their upcard

Pretty good reply Jacob. Well I would suggest the same but when I actually play at casinos, I forget about techniques and strategy and just follow what my intuition says!

Its good to hear that you listen to your intuition but blackjack is all about probability and hence if you forget the techniques that are set since many years, you might not be able to take complete advantage of the game.

I think you’ve read right. If dealer has 10 or more and you are on 16. You should probably stand. Luck is on your side.

Nope I would not stand on 16. I would go for another card. 16 is pretty weak unless you are sure that dealer is going to burst.

Well standing on the 16 when the up card is a 10 or a face card is the same, so I don’t see what the discussion is really about.  I think that this is a solid strategy but you got to stick to it for this to work through time, in your advantage.

I think standing on 16 you should take one more card and see if you can advance a bit more but that should only be if dealer isn’t in danger of bursting himself.

I usually stand if the dealers card is a face card otherwise I hit. I should probably stand if they have a 10 too but I don’t. You can’t really learn all the tricks from a book. I think the more you play the better you get.

Definitely JokersWild, if you make an effort to try and learn basic strategy, it will become second nature to you over time.

I go all out sometimes and sometimes it doesn’t pan out. I am all for taking that final hit and hoping it is a low card or that the dealer busts. It’s a rush when things do go your way, which is why I keep going back for more.

I have never been afraid to stand and loose a hand.  For some reason it is much more frustrating to me, if I take another card and bust, if I loose because somebody else had higher, it just seems easier for me to understand.

Same here. If I am on 16, I would stand if the dealer has 10 or higher as then either its clear win or loose situation depending on his cards.

This best thing to do in my opinion, and has worked for me is consistency in a strategy. I prefer to follow the book and hit on 16, unless if the dealer is showing a bust card.

I agree, hit the 16 if dealer has 7 or above and stand if 2-6…unless you have a pair of 8’s then you split them (always split Aces and 8’s), or if you have a soft 16, then I would double down vs. 5 or 6 and hit against anything else.
